Wrenching political events inspired three of this evening's composers. F. Gerard Errante's Silent Tears responds to a poignant story of the Ethiopian famines of the '80s, while Judith Shatin's Sea of Reeds was inspired by the Biblical story of the Israelites crossing out of Egypt, and the all too current versions of this flight. Australian composer Martin Wesley-Smith's X, for clarinet, electronics and CD-ROM includes visual images from the tragic conflict in East Timor.
Powerful found sounds -- trains, trucks, and noise -- were the starting point for Path of Iron by Alicyn Warren, Night Traffic, by computer music pioneer Paul Lansky, and Plate Spinning by UVA alum Brad Derrick. The human voice is the basis for Three Hopeless Songs by Columbia University's Brad Garton.
Composer/Performers Bruce Mahin and Mari Kimura; Composer Brad Garton Three guest composer/performers --violinist Mari Kimura and wind player Bruce Mahin -- discuss what it's like to perform and compose with the computer, instead of a human being, as a partner. Composer Brad Garton, who is developing real-time music software for his own interactive pieces, adds his perspective.
